From Historical Hastings
Hastings has perhaps had more public houses and beer-houses per household than many similar towns. Over the years, the number of these has eroded considerably. By way of example, at the time a review was carried out of licensed premises in the town in 1906, there were 136 Ale Houses and 54 Beer Houses (35 on and 19 off), and fifteen premises licensed to sell wine giving a total of 205 premises licensed to sell alcohol excluding pharmacies and grocers[1].
