1876 Naming and Numbering of Roads

The Hastings & St. Leonards Observer of the 5th of February 1876 had the following reporting on a council meeting touching on numbering and naming of streets in St. Leonards:-

The Naming and Numbering of Streets

The following report of the committee was read on this subject:-

The committee met, and considered the question of naming and numbering the streets, &c., in St. Leonards, and recommend as follows:-viz., that Warrior-square henceforth be the boundary between Norman-​road​ east and Norman-​road​ west, instead of London-​road​ as at present and that Norman-​road​ west be numbered alternately; that London Road be numbered alternately from the bottom of such ​road​ up to the borough boundary; that Magdalen-​road​ and Bohemia-​road​ be numbered; that Pevensey-​road​ be numbered consecutively, the numbering to commence at Mr. Ticehurst's house; that Gensing-​road​ be numbered consecutively, the numbering to commence on the west side of the ​road​ at the Norman-​road​ end; that Silchester-​road​ be numbered alternately; that Carisbrook-​road​ be numbered consecutively, the numbering to commence at the south end of the ​road​; that Kenilworth-​road​ be numbered consecutively, the numbering to commence at the south end of the ​road​; that new Alexandra-terrace be called Alexandra-terrace, and that it be numbered consecutively, the numbering to commence from Hatherley-​road​; that Clyde-​road​ be numbered consecutively, the numbering to commence at the London-​road​ end; that Anglesea-​road​ be numbered consecutively, to commence at the London-​road​ end; that Upper and Lower Maze-hill be henceforth called Maze-hill only, and that the houses be numbered, the numbering to commence at the bottom of the hill; that Church-​road​ be numbered consecutively, the numbering to commence from Norman-​road​ east; that Western-​road​ be numbered consecutively, the numbering to commence from Norman-​road​ west; that West-hill-​road​ be numbered alternately, the numbering to commence at the east end, the ​road​ to terminate at the Bopeep Hotel. The committee also recommended that, instead of writing the names of the different streets, &c., on the walls of houses, &c., that enamelled iron plates be used for the purpose.
