A member of the Carswell Family. Joseph was apprenticed to John Carswell (born 1713) at Burwash as a baker in March 1741/2 .
He is subsequently recorded as having paid scot as baker from 1748 (half-year), meal-seller & corn seller from 1758/9 and miller from 1772/3 until 1789. In 1777, Joseph bought a slaughterhouse in Church St near the Croft from Samuel Roberts and converted it to a warehouse [1].
During 1779 he bought a windmill on Barn Field (built by John Nevell c 1752) from Thomas Dodson for £315, and in 1785 moved into vacant property at 56 Market Street (High Street). Stables were added there around the time of his death in 1789.
