Ropewalk

Ropewalks were long straight passageways where rope could be stretched out and spun. In Hastings, two rope walks each of 120-150 fathoms[a] in length,were established in the America Ground by Messrs. Thwaites & Co. and Messrs. Breeds & Co[1]. The first of these was on the beach, roughly where Carlisle Parade now stands, and the second along the line of Robertson Street[2] A further, possibly earlier, ropewalk was in The Croft prior to 1805[3]
