Unidentified Child's body found in Well[edit]

On the 1st of March, 1859, a Coroner's inquest was opened on a reportedly well-dressed child discovered dead in a well at 7 Cross Street by a labourer, Mr Edward Kenward. The post-mortem carried out by Dr. A. H. Marks revealed that the child was around 3 months old, had been well cared for and fed and that the child's body had been in the water for up to 10 days. The house at the time was empty, and in spite of an appeal including a reward of £50 for information nothing further was discovered[1].
