Coastguard Station
During the late 18th century, a Coastguard Station sat in the America Ground, at the middle of today's Robertson Terrace, roughly centrally positioned on the wall in front of the aforementioned terrace. This was one of the last buildings removed from the America Ground in 1836, and a replacement was constructed at the top of Cuckoo Hill - today's St. Michaels Place. The construction of this building commenced on the 14th of April 1836, and nine silver coins were placed under the first stone laid. During the night, however, the stone was raised and the coins missing[1]. The building still exists today, however is a private residence.
On the 17th of December, 2020 the radar antenna which had been in place at the Fairlight base since 2010 was replaced by a temporary scanner - the rotation mechanism having failed on the existing installation and was sent away for repair[2].
