From Historical Hastings
Prior to around 1750, the surnames of Bread/Breads/Bredes and Breeds appear to be mixed and interchangeable, possibly as a result of local dialect or simple spelling/transcription errors in the records. The family itself would appear to have originated in Rye, with the earliest known ancestor being John Bread who was born and married in the town in 1580 and 1613 respectively. Being concerned only with the history of Hastings only the local branches of the family tree are explored in detail, starting with John Bread (circa 1580-).
