Kicking Donkey

From Historical Hastings

This beer-house located in Hill Street may have been named after the death of a eight/nine year old child - John Archdeacon whose grave in All Saints Church relates a cautionary tale about the tormenting of a donkey, however this is likely apocryphal - the cause of death was organ failure which was unrelated to the boy being punished by the owner of the animal, which was actually a mule.
