William Harvey Du Cros (although he went by Harvey, preferring not to use his first name) was of Huguenot ancestry and an entepreneur. As president of the Irish Cyclists' Association, he was approached by two associates of John Dunlop who had developed air filled tyres for bicycles. Seizing the opportunity, Harvey set up a new company in 1889 to produce these tyres. Production was moved to England when the Corporation of Dublin took action against his factory due to the foul odours produced by the manufacture of rubber.
Involving his sons in the business it flourished and he was able to retire from the company in 1895. The following year Du Cros bought up shares in the Pneumatic Tyre Company and floated a new concern - the Dunlop Rubber Company which introduced tyres for cars in 1900.
The year prior to this, Annie passed away, Harvey later marrying Florence Gibbings. William was a keen motorist and cyclist, introducing motor-taxis to London and then, in 1906 becoming M.P. for Hastings until 1908 and residing at Levetleigh (his son Harvey James du Cros taking over this property when his father moved out) and 106 Marina, becoming a Justice of the Peace while at the latter address. He moved back to Ireland in 1918 and died in Dalkey, Co. Dublin, on the 21st of December 1918[1].
