Founded in 1854 (making it possibly the earliest bonfire society in the town), mention of this society appears in T. B. Brett's histories in 1863, where the annual procession featured a Russian Bear as its effigy - possibly a reference to the recent Russian war. At this time, Brett gives the number of members as 85[1]. In 1891, the Coach and Horses was utilised as the starting point for their annual parade, possibly also being the starting point for other years[2].
