Pedestrian Tunnel
Hastings has had a number of pedestrian underpasses, some still extant, others now lost. Three particularly noteworthy tunnels crossed under the sea-front road (A259); one leading from the White Rock Pavilion to the Pier, a similar tunnel existing between Marine Court and the beach, with the final albeit earliest tunnel from the Royal Victoria Hotel to the Pavilion (now Azur); although this would appear to have originally led to the beach as evidenced by an 1824 etching. The first two of these tunnels had coloured glass embedded in the roof similar to Bottle Alley, being contemporaneous with the construction of Bottle Alley. All three of these tunnels are now closed, the last two during WW2 and the first listed due to anti-social behaviour around 2019. A further tunnel joined the two halves of St. Helen's Hospital under Frederick Road - this tunnel being sealed when the hospital buildings were demolished.
