Born to Ernest & Caroline Mitchell during 1895 Malcolm was one of the three men from the Mitchell family who ran Malcolm Mitchell's surplus store in the High Street. At the age of nine, Malcolm received six strokes of the birch after being caught stealing both money from a shop in All Saints Street and some glassware, together with breaking into the offertory box at St Mary In The Castle in conjunction with two other boys, Phillip Winborne (11) and William Bowls (13). Winborne received the same punishment as Malcolm, whilst Bowls was sentenced to nine strokes of the birch and nine days in gaol[1]
