Inkwell Incident

There was a noteworthy incident, when, in a fit of pique threw an inkwell out of a window, it landing on, and staining, a statue in the garden. "His servant," says the biographer, in a note, "had brought him a large jar of ink, in which, not supposing it to be full, he had thrust his pen down to the very bottom. Enraged at finding it come out all smeared with ink, he flung the bottle out of the window into the garden, where it lighted, as has been described, upon one of eight leaden Muses that had been imported some time before from Holland; the ninth having been by some accident left behind.[2]
