George Payne (1864-1940)

From Historical Hastings

Was the founder of the Dawn & Dorset laundry via his company Payne and Company in 1895. Mr. Payne was reluctantly nominated for council in 1920, living at 16 Laton Road at the time, having come to Hastings in 1887 ostensibly to die, but was invigorated by the environment and his hard work. He originally worked for the Hastings & St Leonards Observer as a printer's reader, supplementing his income by selling papers on the street and programmes on Hastings Pier[1]
