Essenden Road first appears in an 1895 directory when, apparently, only one house had been erected. That was occupied by Mr V B Crake whose first wife was from Essenden, Hertfordshire which seems to explain the naming of the road.
A map dating from 1901 shows that part of the road adjoining Boscobel Road was called Medina Road, but that name does not appear in local directories. This road was renumbered during 1949.[1]
