The pre-cursor to The Bourne, this short street in the Old Town terminated in the vicinity of Breeds Brewery and was largely cleared, together with many of the twittens that existed off this street. In its heyday, it is possible that the Bourne Stream which ran through the centre of this street, by means of a pair of sluice gates added at the seaward end formed a natural harbour and the buildings abutting the stream on each side had quays for loading and unloading of goods. The street was certainly exceptionally wide by comparison to similar-aged thoroughfares in the town[1].
