Although perhaps not quite as well known as his father, or brother Decimus, Alfred took quite an interest in local affairs and is mentioned frequently in contemporary reports of the 19th century. He was one of St. Leonards Commissioners[1], becoming chairman of the Commissioners for a period, Mayor in 1848, a magistrate by 1861 and living at 64 Marina[2], president to the St. Leonards Mechanics Institute in 1867[3] and secretary to the St. Leonards Archers[4]. He died in 1877 suddenly of a heart complaint; reporting feeling unwell and expiring shortly after the doctor had been summoned[4]; at this time he was still residing at 64 Marina and left an estate valued at under £12,000[5]
