• The |image= parameter allows the full image syntax to be used. |image=[[File:Example.jpg|265px]] is exactly equivalent to |image_name=Example.jpg
• The |manager= and |owner= parameters are equivalent to |pregroup= and |postgroup= respectively.
• Note that if both alternative and equivalent are given, both will be displayed.
• Previously, |line= was similarly treated as equivalent to |original=, but it now displays as Line. As a temporary measure, the use of |line= will place the article in hidden Category:Unusual parameters of Infobox station template so that they can be evaluated whether |original= was intended.

• borough - this should be the lowest level of local government for the place where the station was situated, and should be the modern local authority, not a historic area.
  • For England, refer to the hierarchical list of regions, counties and districts, and use the entry in the rightmost column.
  • For Scotland, use the relevant council area
  • For Wales, use the relevant principal area

When displaying an image either 'image' or 'image_name' should be used, not both. The 'image' field allows an image width to be specified, while 'image_name' automatically sets the width to 265px (preferred).

When identifying the original company and pre-grouping company 'original' and ' pregroup' should be used. In the event that the station is reopened (for example - Alloa railway station, it will not conflict with the infobox for open stations. The 'line' and ' manager' fields refer to the initial setup of the template and should be avoided to prevent this possible conflict.

The 'original' field refers to the company that originally founded the station if different from the 'manager' field.

The 'pregroup' field refers to the historical railway company that owned and/or maintained the station prior to the 1923 grouping.

The 'postgroup' field refers to the Big Four company that took over after the 1923 grouping.

Note: when using the {{coord}} template in the |coordinates= parameter, the latitude and longitude should have the same number of decimal places (including trailing zeroes). Four decimal places are recommended for disused stations as, in a lot of cases, a former station site may be difficult to locate.

By default, coordinates are displayed in the infobox only, this is useful where an article has more than one infobox. To show coordinates both in the infobox and at upper right, add |display=inline,title to the Coord template.

Microformats

The HTML markup produced by this template includes an hCard microformat, which makes the place-name and location parsable by computers, either acting automatically to catalogue articles across Wikis, or via a browser tool operated by a person, to (for example) add the subject to an address book. Within the hCard is a Geo microformat, which additionally makes the coordinates (latitude & longitude) parsable, so that they can be, say, looked up on a map, or downloaded to a GPS unit.
