William Langdon was born in 1879, the sixth son of a botanist, A. W. Langdon. Became a solicitor in 1902, rising to a partner in the firm by 1911. He was a Freemason, member of Rye Golf Club, president of the Clive Vale Cricket Club, clerk to the Governors of Hastings Grammar School and founding partner of Young, Coles and Langdon[1][2] He acquired Clive Vale House in 1925 and lived there until his death in 1948[3]
