V Goddard Shoe Repairs

From Historical Hastings

In 1911 George Goddard, bootmaker, of 4 Hughenden Place, had a son George Victor Martin Luther Goddard aged 11. In 1939 the son, of 24 Vicarage Road, styled himself Victor G M L Goddard, Master Bootmaker. In Kellys’ 1930 – 1938 his address given under Boot and Shoemakers is 32 Whitefriars Road.

WW1 and injury

He served in the Army from 7 March 1917 to 19 December 1919, being described as “surgical bootmaker” working for his father on enlistment. He was wounded by machine-gun fire in the left arm while advancing on 22 October 1918 – just 20 days before the cease fire. This caused fractures of the ulna and radius with damage to the median nerve. As a result he was discharged as 50% disabled having lost his little finger and having poorly functioning wrist and fingers – not good for a bootmaker. His address on enlistment and discharge is given as 32 Whitefriars Road. He married in 1924 and died aged 89 in 1988.[1]
