Thomas grew up at 1 Winding Lane, the fifth child of eight that were born to Henry and Elizabeth Poole[1]. Joining up to fight in the Crimea, he passed away from cholera on the 3rd of June, 1855 leaving his wife Maria to care for their two young children, Jane and Matilda, aged four and two respectively[2]. Maria moved to Tonbridge with her daughters following Thomas's death and died herself in 1859, leaving her children orphans.
