Sir Godfrey Webster was MP for Sussex in 1812, and again from 1818 to 1820 when he did not stand. Owning large tracts of land in both Hastings and Battle, his main residence would appear to have been Battle Abbey[1]. During the early 19th century, he sold his lands on the eastern slopes of the Priory Valley to Edward Milward (1765-1833), who in turn sold it to a banking firm which enabled the construction of Wellington Square.
