Built by James Burton in 1830, this arch over what was the principal road (now Maze Hill) from London to St Leonards marked the northern boundary of James Burton's new town. The archway became damaged by a large vehicle in 2002 and following its repair has remained closed to vehicles ever since.

The author Henry Rider Haggard lived at here from 1918 to 1923.
