A silversmith and jeweller by trade[1], James Troup was the original builder of Warrior Square, having purchased the land from the Eversfield estate in 1834. James got as far as constructing some mansions (later the Edinburgh Hotel) before running out of funds and becoming declared insolvent in 1855. Troup would fight unsuccessfully for the rest of his life to get the surplus realised from the subsequent conveyances of his land awarded to him[2].
Marrying Elizabeth Smith on the 17th of May, 1838, the couple would appear to have had a residence in London and another at 10 Carlisle Parade. James died at his London address in Russell Square[3] on the 2nd of May 1867 and was buried in Kensal Green Cemetery. His estate was valued at less than £300[4].
