In the 19th Century, Augustus Hare, a writer, acquired Holmhurst, making many changes to the property and its extensive grounds, these additions being in the Italian and Pre-Raphaelite styles. Augustus Hare not only wrote but illustrated numerous travel books, the finest of which related to Florence.

Convent School

The site later became a small private school and home to many Nuns. The now derelict Queen Anne Statue is on the site, and with the re-development of the site to become, it is planned that this is to be restored and made accessible to the public.
