Granville Supermarket

From Historical Hastings

This supermarket opened circa 1970 in purpose-built premises on the site of numbers 39-41 Sedlescombe Road North, with the first floor being occupied by store and staff rooms. The site had previously been two bay-fronted dwellings with gardens to the front, both since converted to retail outlets on the ground floor - number 39 having been a greengrocers[1]. Interestingly, the plans for the building reveal that the first-floor store rooms were serviced from a loading bay at the rear of the premises (together with staff parking) via a conveyor belt running alongside the stairs leading to the first floor. The first floor had a floor area approximately half of that of the ground - the rear being a flat roof as still extant today[2]. By 1981, the supermarket had closed and was taken over by a local musical instrument retailer from Eastbourne - Peter Bonner Musical[3].
