The son of a farmer, Charles married the daughter of a Lydd property-owner, Matthew Fagg, who built Exmouth House (owning both this and Exmouth Cottage) at All Saints Church in November of 1827, and subsequently inherited much of Fagg's estate including property in Lydd and Pevensey upon his father-in-law's death in 1839.
Working in partnership with his younger brother Robert as a coal-merchant and ship-owner, Charles, like his brother, had been a parish officer and a St. Leonards Commissioner for ten years or more.
Charles Deudney was resident at 105 (now 116) Marina at the time of his death. Leaving a widow and five children[1], Charles was buried in St. Leonards by the Rev. Thomas Vores, incumbent at St. Mary In The Castle church on the 19th of December 1844. The terms of his will stipulated that all of his property was to be sold and the proceeds to be placed into trust and disbursed to his wife (providing she did not remarry) and children in equal parts, the resulting funds being declared as being below £3,000[2].
