Edmund Pelham (1533-1606)

From Historical Hastings

Also known as Edward, he was the fifth son of Sir William Pelham and his second wife, Mary Sandys. Marrying Ellen Darrel of Scotney Castle, they had at least one son Herbert around 1587 who was the ancestor of the Catsfield Pelhams.

A lawyer, he was admitted to Gray's Inn in 1563 and called to the bar in 1574, and worked as a barrister for 40 years. Edward was elected M.P. for Hastings in 1597, and he became Serjeant-at-Law in 1601 aged around 70. From this time, his wealth increased significantly, as Chief Baron of the Exchequer from 1602 until his death in 1606, being invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1602 and knighted in 1604 by King James I.[1]
