Brassey was the son of a railway contractor, and was M.P. for Hastings 1868-1886 after sitting as the Member for Devonport for a short period, setting up the Brassey Institute. Whilst M.P. for Hastings, together with U. J. Kaye-Shuttleworth (M.P. for St. Leonards) he petitioned parliament to legalise marriage to a deceased wife's sister[1]. Educated at Oxford, he became a barrister, being admitted to the bar in 1866. Becoming Lord of the Admiralty between 1880 and 1884, he then acted as secretary to the Admiralty for a period. He inherited the title of Baron Brassey of Bulkley on the 16th of October 1886.[2].

Travels

Between 6 July 1876 and 27 May 1877 Brassey circumnavigated the world in his steam-assisted three-masted topsail-yard schooner Sunbeam, another yacht designed for him by St Clare Byrne. This voyage is said to have been the first circumnavigation by a private yacht. He became governor of Victoria, Australia between 1895 and 1900 and was feted upon his return to his home-town of Hastings with a grand parade. He served as Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports from 1908 to 1913. His first wife, Annie dying young (aged 48) in 1887, he remarried three years later and had a further child.

Thomas became a mason at the Derwent Lodge in 1869[3]
