The Jane

From Historical Hastings

The Jane was a fast smuggling cutter built by Ransom and Ridley's Shipyard captained by Captain Doré, which Banks in his lecture 'Smugglers and Smuggling' asserts was an assumed name. The captain was fond of stating, when being pursued, that the vessel should "Go along Jane, or Johanna will become a widow." Johanna was his wife and unfortunately, his sentiment came to be. Johanna did end a widow, the vessel being believed to have been scuttled off Ireland, but no trace of the wreckage, or the crew was found.[1]
