Charles Eaton (1834-1925)
Councillor Charles Thomas Eaton was born in Hastings during 1834 to John Eaton and Elizabeth Oliver. He married Dinah Parsonage in 1856 and they had three children; Francis, William and Ann Emma[1].
Business Life
Charles ran a drapery business and lived his whole life within the Old Town. He was resident at 47 High Street between 1861 and 1881, then moving next door to number 48 High Street and remaining there for the rest of his life[2][3].
Public Life
Standing for Mayor against Thomas Ross (1810-1881), Joshua Huggett and John Henry Cook in 1870 he lost by about a dozen votes, but when a vacancy occurred later in the year, he was returned unopposed. In total Mr.Eaton was a council member for thirty five years, and lost only two elections during his service. Eaton was appointed a Justice of the Peace in 1906[2].
