From Historical Hastings

Hastings has had a number of prominent ship-building companies. Originally many of these were based in the Old Town, but following a decree by the Town Council in 1676 all of the shipyards were moved to the west of George Street[1] - this probably explaining the large number of ship-builders who had premises in front of Pelham Crescent.
